Underneath was, with little doubt, Hanson's most difficult album to make. The near impossibility to cooperate with Island Def Jam and everyone associated with them turned into years of struggle which eventually caused Hanson to break from the label entirely and start 3CG Records, ushering a new era of music that was under Hanson's ultimate control. That bravery resulted in Underneath, an album that changed the course of Hanson's career and began a journey of independence and freedom making music on their own terms. What few may realize is just how much music Hanson created during 2001-2003 to try to appease IDJ and release an album that they wanted.
