Malcolm In The Middle (2001)
Another US rarity - Smile is released on the soundtrack to the hit TV show "Malcolm in the Middle." And now, some wise words of wisdom written in the liner notes of the CD: Ok, they only gave me a little space here, so please listen... IT'S ALL A GIANT CON! Don't be corrupted by the recklessly anti-social message of this crappy show! Here's the real truth: Discipline is its own reward. "Citizenship" is not a dirty word. Kids today have it too easy, and it's made them soft. Most times, your parents really do know better. You really want to be "cool!" Obey your teachers. I know, I know, I play a rebellious kid on TV. But hey, that's my friggin' job. I'm only doing it for the money, which by the way, does not grow on trees. --Malcolm Thank you, Malcolm! That's exactly...what...we...needed. ;-) Smile track 11. |

Princess Diaries (2001)
I think the United States gets a gold star for releasing so many compilations with unique Hanson contributions this year. For some reason, Island thought new studio song, "Wake Up", would be good contribution to Disney's movie, The Princess Diaries. Hanson fans were excited to hear a new song almost six months into the "drought", but truth be told, this song is the only song worth listening to on the whole record (read: boyband/teen pop "songs"). Let's just say that if Hanson were in control, I doubt they would have willingly contributed this song to the soundtrack, in order to stay away from the boyband craze. However, the song did turn some heads, because the soundtrack was very successful (no doubt because Hanson fans bought the CD in droves), but (sadly) Hanson hardly got any recognition for being on the album: Mandy Moore, BB Mak and the Backstreet Boys get most of the credit. Wake Up track 11. |

The Hangover III (2013)
"MMMBop" being featured in the popular "Hangover" movie and soundtrack gave Hanson's publicity a boost in 2013. If you listen closely to the track, the tempo is slightly off-beat when compared to the album version on Middle of Nowhere - likely due to the fact that Mercury / Island owns the rights to the master copy on Middle of Nowhere. So, Hanson released a slightly different version that they owned and could release on their own terms. MMMBop track 1. |
